Kubica will Join Them in World Champion
(CNN) -- BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica has been confirmed as Renault's new F1 driver from 2010 as a direct replacement for Ferrari-bound former world champion Fernando Alonso.
The 24-year-old Pole, who has spent the last three-and-a-half years with the German manufacturer, had been forced to find a new team after BMW revealed they were pulling out of the sport at the end of the year.
Although Renault have struggled since their title triumphs of 2005 and 2006, even with Alonso back at the wheel these past two years, Kubica is confident they can again be a force.
"I'm very happy I will be joining Renault in the 2010 season," Kubica told the team's official Web site."I feel I have a special connection with this team because in 2005 I won the World Series by Renault. This gave me the chance to test with the team in Barcelona, which led to my debut in Formula One. "I am highly motivated and optimistic that we can be at the front of the grid next year and hopefully fighting for the world title," said Kubica.
Renault team principal Bob Bell added: "He is one of the most naturally talented drivers of his generation and it is great to have him next season."
Kubica shone in 2008, claiming his and the team's first win at the Canadian Grand Prix and going on to finish fourth in the drivers' championship.
But BMW Sauber struggled to reproduce a competitive car under 2009's specifications and Kubica lies 14th with a best finish of fourth at the Belgian GP.
THE Renault Formula One team hired Robert Kubica for next season to replace two-time champion Fernando Alonso, who will join Ferrari. The length and terms of the 24-year-old Pole’s contract weren’t disclosed in a team statement today.
Kubica raced for BMW-Sauber since 2006, winning last year’s Canadian Grand Prix. Bayerische Motoren Werke AG is pulling its support of the team after this year.
