Top-seeded Dinara Safina Won’t Be Winning a Major

Top-ranked Dinara Safina has lost

NEW YORK -- Top-ranked Dinara Safina has lost at the U.S. Open, a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5) defeat at the hands of 72nd-ranked Petra Kvitova.
Safina will keep the No. 1 ranking despite Saturday night's third-round loss but will also remain without a major title.
Among all the surprising results from a day of surprises, the loss of a first seed, and the world No. 1 at that, should have been the biggest. But when that top seed is the enigmatic and fragile Dinara Safina, then it is hardly as surprising.
In a match that will further buttress criticism of the WTA ranking system, Safina lost to the 72nd-ranked woman in the world, Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5).
Safina's defeat marked the first time this year she failed to reach at least the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament.
She will retain the world No. 1 ranking despite Saturday night's loss but will also remain without a major title.
Safina struggled mightily in a pair of three-set victories to start the tournament, averaging 43 unforced errors and 13 double faults in the first two rounds.
