Transfer deadline a few Time Ago
Follow all the breaking news as it happens on the final day of the summer transfer window as the clock ticks down to the 5pm deadline.
And there it is. Live to Big Ben... Is it 2010? No, just the close of Deadline Day 2009.
From Mark Ogden: All quiet at Burnley on the Daniel Cousin front. If the fax doesn't get sent to the FA before 5pm, then it's a case of no deal. So they are cutting it fine at Turf Moor and the KC Stadium.
Pre-preamble Britney Spears. Online poker. Lindsay Lohan sex tape. David Beckham. Pornography. Get rich quick schemes. eBay bargains. Michael Jackson. Free money. Manchester United. Tom Cruise. Gay, Tyson. Tyson, Mike. Viagra. Milfs. The X Factor. The war in Iraq. Barack Obama. Cynics might think we're trying to pull an SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) fast one to boost our hit-count, but nothing could be further from the truth. That first paragraph is chock full of just some of the many, many subjects that may come up for discussion in today's Transfer Deadline Day Live, guardian.co.uk/football's rolling report on the frantic last-minute horse-trading set to take place in football clubs around the UK, Europe and beyond between now and 5pm, when the transfer window will slam shut. Although you could be forgiven for thinking that the guy who operates the Sky Sports yellow breaking news ticker will be the hardest working man in sports journalism on a day like today, you'd be mistaken.
And from Jason Burt: Richard Dunne’s move to Aston Villa going down to the wire. Central defender, who would have been due a testimonial next year at Manchester City, is holding out for €1.1 million pay-off. But City are resisting. He’s been offered €85,000-a-week at Villa and the captaincy…
Already bored looking news reporters are stood outside empty football stadiums from Fratton Park to Eastlands and a clock is ticking down in the corner of our screens with Brian Swanson cast in the Jack Bauer role, ready to do whatever it takes to bring us the up to the minute news in excitable and wide-eyed fashion – even if all he’s telling us is that Niko Kranjkar may or may not have been seen on the North Circular somewhere near Golders Green.
With the top clubs appearing to have done all their business early – or in Liverpool’s case decided that they aren’t really in the market for new players anyway – there are few stand out deals waiting to be done.
We'll be here, shackled to our desk with a chain barely long enough to allow access to the bathroom, typing our fingers to the bone as we bring you all the latest news and gossip on a day Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp once described as "my favourite day of the year, my raison d'etre, my first, my last and my everything." Obviously we want to hear from you, so please email your thoughts on the day that's in it, or anything else for that matter. We'd particularly like to hear from you if you've any transfer gossip of your own, or happen to have seen Sergio Aguero and/or David Villa looking in the window of an estate agent's office near you.
